Weekend Possibilities | Home + Garden Show, Ice Skating with Elsa, Chiefs Chili Cookout Both Kinds of Football This Weekend

From the performing arts to indoor soccer and perhaps a home and garden show in between, the penultimate weekend of January has plenty to offer outside of the Chiefs playoff run.

Friday, Jan. 21

10 a.m. – 9 p.m. It’s Johnson County Home + Garden Show weekend at Overland Park Convention Center, 6000 College Blvd. Whether you are a DIY master, looking for ways to save or starting a home project from square one, the three-day home and garden convention could set you up for success. The show will feature industry experts, home and garden vendors, displays, design inspiration, practical information and more. Anyone over the age of 13 can get a day pass for $11. Members of the military, veterans, first responders and health care professionals get in for free on Friday. Educators will have the entrance fee waived on Saturday. 4 – 10 p.m. Start the weekend with Callsign Brewing’s Grand Reopening in North Kansas City, 1340 Burlington St. The family-friendly brewery will have Wolfepack BBQ to go along with a pint. Food is available from 4 p.m. to sell out. Leashed dogs are welcome on the patio.

5 – 8 p.m. The ArtHeals Exhibition from InterUrban ArtHouse, 8001 Newton St., opens to the public Friday evening. Stop by the nonprofit space to see works by local artists that showcase experience in changing physical or mental health. The exhibit will feature art across multiple mediums, including performance art and storytelling. ArtHeals is free.

Saturday, Jan. 22

5 – 8 p.m. Blip Roasters will provide the space and warm drinks for Tears and Jeers Saturday night in the West Bottoms, 1301 Woodswether Road. Comedy meets poetry at the show benefiting Liberation Lit, a local nonprofit dedicated to providing incarcerated individuals the joy of reading. Tickets are available on a sliding scale, from $1 to $20.

7 p.m. There’s real football to be played in downtown Kansas City ahead of Sunday’s big game against the Buffalo Bills at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Sports fans can check out the Kansas City Comets taking on the Tacoma Stars of the Major Arena Soccer League Saturday night at the T-Mobile Center, 1407 Grand Blvd. Tickets to see the Comets, who typically call Cable Dahmer Arena home, on the big stage start at $28.

8:30 p.m. The Band That Fell to Earth KC will hit the recordBar, 1520 Grand Blvd., stage Saturday night with a who’s who of talented Kansas City musicians for the second night of this weekend’s David Bowie tribute shows. The band and recordBar have teamed up to make the performances available via livestream for anyone wary about checking out live music. Proof of vaccination is required to attend the show in person. In-person VIP tickets are $50 and offer an early 7 p.m. entrance. General admission tickets are $20. Livestream access is $10.

Sunday, Jan. 23

1 – 5 p.m. Would you believe it? Elsa and Anna from Disney’s “Frozen” will join kiddos on the ice Sunday afternoon at The Rink at Zona Rosa, 8731 N. Stoddard Ave. Kids can Skate with Elsa and Anna and snap a few photos when they hit the ice at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tickets for the afternoon of ice skating are $14 and include a hot chocolate and s’mores kit. Skate rental is $4. Reservations can be made in advance.

4 – 10 p.m. Watch the Chiefs take on the Bills in Sunday evening’s playoff matchup at The Black Box, 1060 Union Ave. The West Bottoms performing arts space has plans for football and good food at this year’s Chiefs Chili Cookout. If you’re down to put your recipe to the test, email katieg@blackboxkc.com. If eating chili and rooting on the Chiefs is the priority, pull up with an empty stomach and $5. There’s a full bar for those 21 and up. Chili cookoff contestants get in free. Proof of a COVID-19 vaccination is required.

7:30 p.m. The Midwest Trust Center’s The Choir of Man promises high-energy performances of your favorite pop, rock, folk and broadway tunes Sunday night at Yardley Hall at Johnson County Community College, 12345 College Blvd. Tickets are $5 for students and $25 for members of the public.
