We’re taking a moment to recognize Kansas City’s wordsmiths.

Taken from KCPT’s “Arts Upload,” which has amassed an impressive collection of local poets reading their own works, “Spotlight” gives Flatland a chance to catch up with the artists. We find out what they’re up to and get their take on what to watch in the local and national art scene.

This week:

Jeanette Powers | “Little Jennie Sue”

Where do you live now?

I currently live in historic Northeast of KCMO as Artist in Residence at Pink Pony Farms.

Any current projects?

I currently am the creative editor for the publishing venture POP POETRY: #12poetsin12months. This unique publishing project puts out a new poetry book by a local/regional poet each month coupled with a featured reading and open mic at Prospero’s Books.

What’s your best recent moment?

My best moment was marrying my wonderful partner, Ezhno Martin (who’s also been featured on Arts Upload!).

Who are you listening to/reading/watching that we need to know about?

I’m watching slam poetry locally with PoUnd SLAM and Slam ULIT. I’m listening to local folk legend-in-the-making AJ Gaither!

Do you have a goal for 2016?

My goal for 2016 is to race in the MR340 kayak/canoe race from KC to STL!

Next week on “Spotlight”:

Ezhno Martin | “Liberated (Lady Clothes)”
